Rest of the photos. Thankfully I had the JPEGs on Google Drive before my main hard drive failed last night. Sadly I lost all my RAWs and whole lightroom library. Was in the process of getting a backup drive as well. Damn it. Going to try swapping the BIOS to a new board sometime next week and see if that works but I don’t have high hopes.

P art-time c omputer repair tech here - what exactly do you mean by swapping the BIOS to a new board...? BIOS is the ‘firmware’ built into each motherboard to allow the hardware to run....you can’t swap it from board to board?

Assuming you mean swapping the hard drive to a new system to see if it’s readable? What errors were you being given that make you think the drive is dead?

Hard drives have their own BIOS chip separate from the main firmware that contains platter-specific calibrations (among other things) to account for tolerance variance in the heads, motors, etc. that will need desoldered (surface mount) and swapped to the new board in order to even have a chance of working. Pretty common. I think some Samsung drives contain all of that data elsewhere but I’m not entirely sure.

The drive itself was displaying corrupt data and then became entirely inaccessible and unrecognized by the computer’s BIOS and external docks . I’m thinking there are voltage drops to the controller due to a misbehaving spindle motor (which I can’t fix) but I might as well drop $30 on a new controller board on the chance that it works.

Annoyingly I don’t have fine enough probes for my multimeter to really diagnose the board but... whatever.

I’ve never considered repairing a hard drive before. Good for you! I always just make sure the data is backed up and consider all hard drives a disposable component that may fail at any time...

AAAHHHHH, OK....I got you now. I’m used to calling that firmware, but that makes sense....if you can find a board from a similar drive and plop that over, you could get your stuff back hopefully!

Good luck!
